Mineral severance taxes fund the state

Wyoming taxes coal, oil, natural gas and trona at extraction. That revenue, together with federal mineral royalties, covers a large share of state spending and removes the need for an income tax on residents. It also makes state finances sensitive to commodity prices in a way most states are not.

There is no individual income tax, no corporate income tax and no local income tax. Federal tax and FICA are the only deductions on a standard Wyoming pay stub.

The state that invented the LLC

Wyoming enacted the first limited liability company statute in the United States in 1977, roughly a decade before other states followed. Combined with no corporate income tax, no franchise tax and comparatively strong ownership privacy, this built a business formation industry that persists today — a large number of companies are registered in Wyoming by people who have never lived there.

For a Wyoming resident this is mostly background, but it has one direct consequence: registered agent and business services form a real slice of local employment, and if you are self-employed the state is unusually cheap and simple to operate a business from. There is no state income tax on business profits passed through to you personally, and no corporate tax on the entity.

Low across the board, not just on income

Unlike Texas, Wyoming does not offset the missing income tax with high property rates. Effective property tax rates are among the lowest in the country, and the state sales tax is 4% with local additions typically bringing the combined rate to between 5% and 6%.

That combination gives Wyoming one of the lowest overall tax burdens of any state. The trade-off is a small population spread across a large area, with the cost and service implications that follow.

Common questions

Does Wyoming tax retirement income?

No. Social Security, pensions and retirement account withdrawals are all untaxed at the state level.

Is there a local income tax anywhere in Wyoming?

No Wyoming municipality levies an income tax.

Is Wyoming a good state to run a business from?

It is among the simplest. Wyoming pioneered the LLC in 1977 and levies no individual income tax, no corporate income tax and no franchise tax, so pass-through profits reach you untaxed at the state level.

How stable is Wyoming's no-income-tax status?

It is long-standing, though the state's dependence on mineral revenue means budget pressure follows commodity downturns. No serious proposal for an individual income tax has advanced in recent years.
